In the midst of all the craziness and panic, the late Mr. Rogers is still the voice of reason that our children (and, maybe us as well) need to hear.

In 2002, Fred Rogers met with David and Tom Gardner… the co-founders of Motley Fool. Their conversation about how to talk to kids about money is full of gentle wisdom, and is just as applicable today as it was 18 years ago.

If your kids are picking up on the financial worries that the adults around them are experiencing, it’s a good idea to have a heart-to-heart with them. Explain the situation in terms they can understand, and make sure that they know that they are safe and you are there to take care of them. Let them ask questions and listen to their fears, responding in an honest but reassuring way.

As a bonus, Mr. Rogers shares an outlook on finance that all of us can benefit from: Everyone has something to give, and everyone needs something to receive. That’s the basis for healthy capitalism, sharing the value we bring to the world with others and benefiting from the unique value that others bring, as well.
